Gullah Geechee Heritage Festival
The Gullah Geechee heritage is rooted in the rich culture and history of the descendants of West and Central African enslaved people who were brought to the coastal regions of the southeastern United States, particularly in the Sea Islands and coastal areas of South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina, and Florida. The Gullah Geechee people have preserved many aspects of their African heritage, including their language, crafts, cuisine, and spiritual practices, despite centuries of oppression and isolation. Their Creole language, known as Gullah, blends elements of English with African linguistic patterns, reflecting their deep cultural connections to their African ancestry. Traditional crafts such as sweetgrass basket weaving, fishing, and rice cultivation remain central to Gullah Geechee identity. Their music, storytelling, and spiritual practices also carry strong African influences, creating a unique cultural legacy that continues to thrive today. The Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, established by the U.S. Congress in 2006, helps to protect and promote the rich history and contributions of the Gullah Geechee people, ensuring that their traditions and stories are preserved for future generations.
