About Atlantic Beach
Atlantic Beach 90th Anniversary
In October 2024, Atlantic Beach, South Carolina, affectionately known as "The Black Pearl," commemorated its 90th anniversary with a series of community events honoring its rich history and cultural significance. Established in 1934 by Gullah-Geechee descendants during the era of segregation, Atlantic Beach became a cherished haven for African American families, offering a welcoming seaside retreat when access to other beaches was denied. The anniversary festivities included a Community Historic Walk, the illumination of the historic town, a Gullah Geechee Farmers Market, and cultural performances, culminating in a church service at the First Missionary Baptist Church of Atlantic Beach. These events not only celebrated the town's enduring legacy but also underscored its importance as one of the few black-owned and governed oceanfront communities in the United States.
